Brazil’s First Climate Action Clock is Launched by B4 to Showcase Companies’ Positive Impact

Powered by B4’s key indicators—the first climate action exchange in Brazil—the clock aims to highlight the regenerative impact timeline of companies in comparison to the global 1.5-degree Climate Clock alert threshold.

B4, the first climate action exchange in Brazil, launched the Climate Action Clock last week to provide information regarding its positive indicators. These indicators reflect efforts made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. The clock is committed to transparency and publicity regarding positive impact, complementing the Climate Clock, which serves as a global warming alert with global indicators (there is a physical Climate Clock installed in New York City since September 2020, as well as a digital version on the climateclock.world website and other platforms that have adopted the cause, including B4’s platform). The Climate Clock displays numbers and information that represent the countdown to how much time the world has left to prevent climate change from reaching a catastrophic level.

The global panel, translated as the “Climate Clock,” shows how much time is left—in years, days, and hours—before CO2 emissions lead to a 1.5-degree increase in global warming. This figure represents a critical threshold, beyond which there is little that can be done to stop climate change and its severe global consequences. The Climate Clock’s information comes from the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), which conducts research related to the atmosphere and oceans. These data point out that if emissions continue at their current accelerated pace, the planet will soon reach a critical heat level. The clock thus serves as an alert for people to visualize the consequences of global warming and take immediate action.

B4’s Climate Action Clock

With the goal of alerting individuals and companies about the urgent need to address climate change, B4 has launched its own Climate Clock on its platform and is set to announce a physical installation in the coming days. Unlike the Climate Clock, which counts down to when the situation will reach a critical point, B4’s Climate Action Clock marks time from the launch date of the climate action exchange on August 16, 2023. In other words, the clock tracks the regenerative timeline of the positive impact made by companies listed on B4.

In addition to this count, the tool also presents B4’s key indicators, such as the total amount of CO2 being assessed on the platform (currently over 15 million tons), the number of companies applying for listing on B4, the number of companies in the listing process, those approved, and those already validated. The clock also includes data such as the current figure of 1,800 companies undergoing carbon footprint inventory processes.

“Today, around 5,000 companies emit approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 annually—just in Brazil. This contributes to the acceleration of global warming. In this context, B4 was created to build a safe environment that motivates, supports, and maintains companies committed to promoting sustainable practices, reducing their carbon footprint, and contributing to corporate sustainability actions. Within this scope, the Climate Action Clock is part of a greater purpose, showing our indicators transparently, so that people can see what is being done compared to what still needs to be done,” says Odair Rodrigues, founder and CEO of B4.

For B4, this type of tool promotes a sense of urgency among companies, which is extremely necessary for them to start taking action. “B4’s Climate Action Clock is an indicator that tracks the regenerative timeline of companies’ positive impact and contrasts with the alert issued by the Climate Clock since 2020. Companies need to publicize their climate action projects transparently,” adds B4’s founder.

As a way to encourage companies to promote transparency in providing carbon footprint information and data, and to inspire them to initiate projects and actions to reduce their emissions, B4’s website allows companies and institutions to add the clock to their own websites. Additionally, a physical installation can be requested through contact with B4’s team via email at esg@b4.capital.

About B4

Acting as a facilitator in the carbon credit market is one of B4’s main objectives. Launched in August 2023 in São Paulo, B4 is Brazil’s first climate action exchange. Through blockchain technology, B4 provides a solution that transforms sustainable assets, making carbon credit records immutable, preventing credit duplication, and ensuring a transparent and secure environment.

“B4 was created to serve as a facilitator in the carbon credit market, which is extremely valuable and growing rapidly, not only in Brazil but worldwide. Our expectation is that the company will generate up to R$12 billion in carbon credits within its first year of operation. This is why the national regulation of this market is very important to us, as well as to all companies and organizations truly concerned with global sustainability,” says Odair Rodrigues, founder and CEO of the company.
